Meghalaya


Literally meaning 'The Abode of Clouds', Meghalaya is a hilly state in north-east India. Forests cover more than thirty percent of the state's area. The main languages in Meghalaya are Khasi, Pnar and Garo with English as the official language of the State.

The interesting places of Meghalaya are as follows:

Shillong
Pine forests and lakes, mountains and waterfalls. This is what the capital of Meghalaya, Shillong is all about. Often known as the 'Scotland of the East', Shillong lies at an altitude of 1496m. A popular hill station for those trying to escape the heat of the pains. The city is well connected by road and can be reached easily. The 'Bara Bazaar' gives a vivid insight into the tribal culture. Also, the Museum of Entomology has a large collection of colorful butterflies and hill insects found in Meghalaya. A delightful picnic holiday can be spent at the gorgeous Elephant Falls in Shillong.

Cherrapunji/ Cherrapunjee
A very well known place, Cherrapunji holds two Guinness world records for receiving the maximum amount of rainfall in a single year (between
August 1860 and July 1861) and for receiving the maximum amount of rainfall in a single month, in July 1861. A scenic road with pine trees , waterfalls and caves, connects Cherrapunji with Shillong.

Mawsynram
This small village near Shillong has recently set the record for being the wettest place on earth.
