Organized by the Tourism Industry of Rajasthan, the Desert Festival is celebrated in the month of February, for 3 continuous days, with exciting events and brilliant local performances.
WHERE
In the Sam Sand Dunes of Thar Desert around Jaisalmer, in front of all the forts and historical ruins of the Yadav Kingdom, providing a background, the activities of the festival take place.
WHAT
The entire region fills with brilliant colors, enchanting music and joyous laughter, during the three days of this festival. Forming an absolute folk environment, men and women sing old archaic ballads of romance, tragedy and valour, covering the history of Rajputana Empire or Rajasthani culture. Along with the splendid music various other activities are also included, like, traditional puppet shows, acrobatics, camel race and other sports, camel tattoo show, and folk dances are also included.
The common tourists can also participate in all the fun filled activities along with the participants, in the turban tying competitions, mehendi competitions, tug of war, Panihari Matka race. The festival is also a sort of fancy dress show, as people, participants and tourists both, come dressed in colorful, traditional costumes and take part in the competitions where winners on the basis of best costume, best turban and even best mustache are selected.
ATTRACTIONS
The famous Gair and Fire dances, Kalbelia Dance, Mr. Desert contest for the best styled mustache, camel races, are amongst some of the best attractions of the festival. All in all, Desert Festival is an absolute cultural delight.
