The history of the Palace On Wheels train is as legendry and vivid as the train itself. Its well-furnished and elegant carriages were once used by the erstwhile rulers of princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India. After the India's independence in 1947, the Indian Railways discontinued the use of these magnificent coaches, as they had elegantly decorated traditional interiors with gorgeous furnishings and it was not viable to include them in the normal passenger trains. In 1981-82, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and the Indian Railways decided to launch a special heritage train for tourists, primarily covering Rajasthan- the most vibrant and colorful state of India. Powered by a steam engine, the Palace On Wheels made its maiden journey on 26th January 1982. Gradually, to enhance the luxury and comforts, RTDC and the Indian Railways made many infrastructure changes in the Palace On Wheels coaches while maintaining the same aesthetics of the interiors alive. As a result in 1991, a new air-conditioned meter gauge Palace On Wheels on the lines of the old heritage train was launched, which has 14 saloons, 2 restaurants cum kitchen cars, one bar cum lounge and 4 service cars.

The Palace On Wheels is truly a self-sufficient train in many respects. The luxury train boasts a total of 14 fully air-conditioned deluxe saloons. All 14 coaches of the Palace On Wheels are named after the erstwhile princely states of Rajasthan: Alwar, Bharatpur, Bikaner, Bundi, Dholpur, Dungarpur, Jaipur, Kota, Sirohi and Udaipur, highlighting the cultural ethos of each state, represented through the use of furniture, handicrafts, painting and furnishings. Each saloon has 4 twin-bedded chambers and is equipped with world-class amenities to enhance the pleasure of your journey. All tastefully decorated coaches are furnished with wall-to-wall carpeting and are provided with all the modern amenities like air-conditioning, channel music, intercom, modern toilets, and shower with hot and cold running water. It's said about the onboard facilities and services on Palace On Wheels that they are even better than some of the best 5-star hotels in India. The luxury train also has an elegantly decorated lounge car with a well-stocked bar and a souvenirs shop 'The Bazaar' where you can buy souvenirs and gift items. Its two dining cars, the Maharaja and the Maharani enjoy a traditional Rajasthani ambience and serve delectable Indian, Continental and traditional Rajasthani cuisines. What's more, each saloon has personal attendants or Khidmatgars who are always at your service. The other onboard facilities on Palace on Wheels include a well-maintained library, satellite phone, laundry services, barbershop, beauty parlor and doctor on call at each station. Many modern facilities like Internet, ATM and e-commerce are also being planned for the Palace On Wheels.
