Rajasthan is a tourists’ paradise with attractions such as Aravalis and Thar Desert. The city is well known for its various instances of Rajput heritage such as the various forts and museums. Following are some of the major cities in Rajasthan from a tourist’s perspective:

Also known as Pink City, Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur is among the premier tourist destinations in India. The city is filled with forts, monuments, palaces, gardens, temples and museums. The major tourist attractions in the central Indian city are Amber Fort, City Palace, which is also known as Chokri Sarhad and Palace of the Winds that is also referred to as Hawa Mahal.

The historic city of Ajmer has been more popular over the years by virtue of being an entry point to the famous fair at Pushkar. The city can be accessed via train from Delhi and Jaipur. The city also holds immense importance for Muslims as it is home to Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti’s tomb.

The major claim to fame for Bharatpur is the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary, which is an important stopover point for various kinds of migratory birds such as Siberian Crane. The city has been a Jat dominion for years and occupies an important place in the city’s history. It also has other important tourist destinations such as Lohargarh Fort and Devghat.

Located in north-western part of the state, Bikaner is famous for its sweets namely the Bikaneri Bhujia. The city has several important tourist spots such as Junagarh Fort and Lalgarh Palace. There are other prominent tourist spots such as Laxmi Niwas Palace, Shivbari Temple, Karni Mata Temple, and Gajner Palace.

Jaisalmer is referred to as the Golden City and is situated on the western border of India. The city also lies close to the Thar Desert and Pakistan. One of the most preferred tourist activities in Jaisalmer is a desert safari through the sand dunes. The Jaisalmer Fort is the major tourist attraction in this city but GadiSar Lake and Jain Temple are worth paying a visit as well.

The second biggest city in Rajasthan, Jodhpur is also known as Gateway to Thor. The main reason behind such a name is its close proximity to the desert. The high temperatures in the city, for the majority of a year, have also led to it being called the Sun City. The Mehrangarh Fort and the historic site of Mandore are the major tourist sites in the city.

Located in Hadoti region in Rajasthan, Kota has been built up on both sides of Chambal River. The pleasant climate of the town means it is a preferable tourist destination. The major tourist attractions in the city are Jag Mandir, Chambal Garden, Kota Barrage, Khade Ganesh Ji Temple and Maharao Madho Singh Museum.

Udaipur was the capital of Mewar, an erstwhile princely state of Rajasthan. The city is also known for the many palaces and lakes. It is also highly favored by tourists and more so among affluent Europeans. The famous James Bond film Octopussy was also shot in the city. It is also known for its excursion opportunities.
