15 July 2010: India got a new symbol for its national currency, Rupee. It has been designed by D. Udaya Kumar, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) assistant professor. The design has been derived from the Devanagri script ('Ra') and also incorporates the english letter 'R'. Also, the two lines and the negative space in between represents the Indian Flag. The rupee now joins the elite club of US Dollar, British Pound-Sterling, Euro and Japanese Yen to have its own symbol.
